New Cashmere LCA Gives Apparel Buyers Better Primary Data for Material Decisions
Textile Exchange published a new cashmere life-cycle assessment on July 16, 2026, addressing a long-standing shortage of material-specific impact data. The study uses information collected directly from 170 herders and farmers across the world’s two largest cashmere-producing countries and covers both farmed and nomadic grazing systems.
Previous cashmere modeling often relied on proxy data from other animal fibers. Primary data can give brands a more relevant foundation for identifying impact hotspots, setting questions for suppliers and interpreting product-level assessments.
An LCA+ approach
Textile Exchange describes the research as an LCA+ study. Alongside conventional environmental indicators, it investigates soil health and includes a separate social assessment covering communities, livelihoods and human rights.
This broader approach is useful because cashmere production is closely linked to grazing landscapes and rural livelihoods. A material decision based only on carbon data can miss other significant effects and local conditions.
How buyers should use the findings
The study should strengthen sourcing questions rather than become a shortcut for marketing claims. Results from one assessment may not automatically describe a specific supplier, farm, yarn or finished garment. Product construction, fiber quality, processing route, dyeing, knitting, garment manufacturing, transport and product life all affect the final impact profile.
Procurement teams should ask how closely their supply chain matches the systems represented in the data. They should also check allocation methods, boundaries and assumptions before comparing cashmere with other fibers.
A practical cashmere sourcing checklist
- Confirm fiber origin. Record the region, supplier and chain-of-custody evidence for each program.
- Connect quality and impact decisions. Fiber length, fineness, color and contamination affect processing yield and product durability.
- Map processing stages. Scouring, dehairing, spinning, dyeing, knitting and finishing may involve multiple facilities.
- Evaluate durability. Pilling performance, construction and care guidance influence how long a garment remains useful.
- Review social and landscape context. Ask suppliers what programs address herder livelihoods, grazing management and traceability.
Implications for manufacturers
OEM/ODM suppliers working with cashmere blends should maintain accurate fiber-content records, approved yarn sources and lot-level documentation. They should communicate clearly when a blend, yarn count or finishing route changes, because substitutions can alter both performance and the evidence behind a material claim.
For buyers, better data does not remove the need for judgment. It makes that judgment more informed. Used carefully, the new study can help brands combine environmental evidence, social context, quality requirements and commercial realities in a more credible material strategy.
