Apparel Alliance Releases Supply Chain Taxonomy Version 2 for Better Data Alignment
The apparel alliance formed by Apparel Impact Institute, Cascale, Textile Exchange and ZDHC Foundation released Version 2 of its Supply Chain Taxonomy on July 14, 2026. The framework gives textile, clothing, leather and footwear companies a shared vocabulary for describing facilities and production processes.
That may sound administrative, but inconsistent terminology creates practical problems. One company may classify a wet-processing activity at Tier 2 while another records the same activity elsewhere. When brands combine supplier, energy, water, chemical and emissions data, those differences can distort comparisons.
What Version 2 changes
The alliance says the revision improves consistency, transparency and collaboration across the sector. It also clarifies that wet processing should be accounted for across all relevant tiers rather than treated only as a Tier 2 activity. That distinction matters because dyeing, finishing, washing and coating can occur at different points in a product’s route.
A common taxonomy gives brands and suppliers a cleaner foundation for facility mapping. It can help teams identify where an operation occurs, which organization controls it and which data should be collected there.
Why apparel buyers should care
Outerwear, swimwear, activewear and hoodies often involve more processing than a simple factory list reveals. A shell fabric may be dyed, coated and laminated at separate sites. Stretch fabric may involve knitting, dyeing and functional finishing. Garment washing or printing can take place after assembly.
If those steps are classified inconsistently, buyers may overlook a site during risk assessment or request the wrong data from a supplier. Shared definitions make it easier to connect a bill of materials with actual production stages.
Practical steps for sourcing teams
- Normalize facility names. Use one legal name and address for each production site across sourcing, compliance and sustainability systems.
- Map processes, not only vendors. Record spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, finishing, coating, printing, washing and assembly separately.
- Link processes to styles. A supplier may use different mills or finishers for different programs.
- Review wet-processing visibility. Confirm where color, performance and surface treatments are applied.
- Align data requests. Ask each facility for information appropriate to the process it performs.
Implications for OEM/ODM suppliers
Manufacturers can prepare by maintaining an accurate process map for each product category and approved material source. Commercial teams should be able to explain the route from fiber or yarn through fabric production, finishing, garment assembly and shipment.
The value of the taxonomy will depend on consistent use. Buyers and suppliers should agree on definitions at onboarding and keep maps current when a mill, dyehouse or subcontractor changes. Better classification will not solve every traceability problem, but it reduces ambiguity and supports more reliable decisions.
